Bird Watching Tours in Monteverde
Birding starts before the forest wakes up. We enter the reserve at opening time, when the fruiting trees are busiest and the bellbirds are still calling, and we carry a spotting scope so a quetzal high in an avocado tree becomes a full-frame view instead of a silhouette.
Our guides bird Monteverde year round and know which trails are producing that week. Quetzal season peaks around nesting, roughly February to June, but the cloud forest holds hummingbirds, tanagers, guans and trogons in every month — no sighting is ever guaranteed.

Birds you can look for in Monteverde
Monteverde sits where Caribbean and Pacific slopes meet, and that overlap is why the bird list is so long. The resplendent quetzal is the bird most guests come for, feeding in wild avocado trees and most reliable around nesting, roughly February to June. The three-wattled bellbird announces itself long before you see it, and the black guan, emerald toucanet, long-tailed manakin and slate-throated redstart are all cloud-forest regulars.
Hummingbirds alone justify a morning: violet sabrewing, green hermit, lesser violetear, purple-throated mountaingem, green-crowned brilliant and the coppery-headed emerald, a species found only in Costa Rica. We carry a spotting scope, so a quetzal high in the canopy becomes a full-frame view instead of a silhouette. No sighting is ever guaranteed.

Our five-hour private bird watching tour covers one reserve in the best hours of the morning, when fruiting trees are busiest and the bellbirds are still calling. The private full-day birding tour extends that across the day and, depending on the season, more than one reserve — it is the option for birders working on a list rather than looking for a first cloud-forest morning.
Both birding tours are private and guided-service only: the guide, the scope and the planning are included, and the reserve entrance is not. For a shared walk with admission already in the price, our daytime nature tours are the better fit — they are wildlife walks with plenty of birds, rather than dedicated birding.
Why the reserve is chosen at the meeting point
Birding conditions in Monteverde change week to week: fruiting trees, nesting activity, wind on the continental divide and rain all move the birds around. For that reason both birding tours meet at Stella's and the reserve is agreed there with your guide, based on the season, the conditions and what our birding team has been seeing.
That is also why the entrance fee is not included in the birding price: the reserve is not fixed until you and the guide decide it, and admission is coordinated and paid on arrival at whichever reserve you choose together.

- Are the birding tours private?
- Yes. Both the five-hour bird watching tour and the full-day birding tour run privately, with only your party and the bird guide.
- Will we see a resplendent quetzal?
- We cannot promise it — these are wild birds. Chances are highest in nesting season, in the early morning, near fruiting wild avocado trees, which is exactly how the guide plans the route.
