Daytime in Monteverde is when the forest shows its structure: epiphyte gardens stacked on a single trunk, hummingbirds working the flowering shrubs, agoutis crossing the trail, and — in season — the resplendent quetzal feeding in a wild avocado.
All of our daytime walks run in Curi-Cancha Reserve or the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, and the reserve admission is included in the price. Curi-Cancha or the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve
Both reserves protect cloud forest on the continental divide, and each has its own character. Curi-Cancha mixes old-growth forest with open edges and gardens, which makes wildlife easier to spot and photograph; admission covers the whole day, so you can stay on your own after the walk until 4:30 pm.
The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is denser, taller and more atmospheric, with the classic mossy, dripping trails people picture when they think of a cloud forest. Its admission is tied to the guided visit, so you leave the reserve when the tour ends. Each reserve has its own page and its own booking flow, so you choose the reserve rather than a generic tour.
Timing and pace
Curi-Cancha walks start at 7:30 am and finish between 10:00 and 10:30 am, the hours when birds and mammals are most active and the trails are quietest. Monteverde Cloud Forest walks follow the admission slot available that day, and when possible they also start at 7:30 am.
The pace is a naturalist pace, not a hike: a few kilometres of maintained trail with frequent stops at the scope. That is enough for most children from about four years old, and comfortable for anyone walking steadily without needing level ground.
Admission included on every daytime walk
On all of our daytime nature tours the reserve entrance fee is included in the price and we buy the tickets for you — nothing to queue for, nothing to settle at the gate, and no surprise at the ticket window.
You then choose how you walk: a shared small group of 6–10 guests max per guide, or a private walk where the route bends to your interests. If your focus is birds rather than wildlife in general, look at our bird watching tours, which are private, guided-service only and meet at Stella's.
